3 Ukrainian NPPs reduce electricity production due to russian strikes - IAEA
Three operating nuclear power plants in Ukraine - Khmelnytskyi, Rivne and South Ukraine nuclear power plants - have reduced their capacity due to russian missile strikes on the country's energy infrastructure. This further increases the threat to nuclear safety in wartime.
Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has announced this.
According to him, in less than two weeks, the Khmelnytskyi, Rivne and South Ukraine nuclear power plants were forced to reduce electricity production as a precautionary measure due to large-scale military operations. As a result, nine reactors at these plants had their capacity reduced, and one of the reactors at the Rivne nuclear power plant was completely disconnected from the grid.
Despite the loss of communication with two power lines near the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant, the plants continued to receive electricity from outside. However, Grossi stressed that Ukraine's energy infrastructure remains extremely vulnerable, which puts nuclear safety at risk.
"Ukraine's energy infrastructure is extremely fragile and vulnerable, putting nuclear safety at great risk. Once again, I call for maximum military restraint in areas with major nuclear energy facilities and other sites on which they depend," Director General Grossi said.
The IAEA will continue to assess damage to facilities and power lines that are key to ensuring nuclear safety in the country.
On the night of November 17, the aggressor country russia launched a massive combined strike on Ukrainian energy facilities with various types of air-, land- and sea-based missiles, as well as Shahed-type strike drones.
Kherson may be left without electricity for several days due to today's massive attack by the aggressor country russia.
The power outage schedules for the Odesa Region have been updated for November 28.
In addition, schools in the Rivne Region switched to distance learning due to a power outage in the city. More than 280,000 consumers were left without electricity.
