US to deploy troops with HIMARS and hypersonic missiles in Japan and Philippines due to situation with Taiwan
The U.S. will create temporary military bases in Japan and the Philippines in case of an unforeseen situation with Taiwan, which is under threat of invasion by China.
The Japanese agency Kyodo News reported this, citing its own sources.
The deployment of missile units will be included in the first joint operational plan of the U.S. and Japan.
According to the agency's sources, a U.S. Marine regiment armed with M142 HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems will be deployed along the island chain stretching from the Japanese prefectures of Kagoshima and Okinawa towards Taiwan.
At an early stage, when the emergence of unforeseen circumstances with Taiwan becomes highly probable, temporary bases will be created on the islands of this chain in accordance with the recommendations of the U.S. military.
The Japan Self-Defense Forces are expected to be mainly engaged in the logistical support of the U.S. Marines, in particular the supply of fuel and ammunition.
The U.S. will deploy long-range fire units in the Philippines. Back in early 2023, Washington and Manila agreed to increase the number of military bases available for use by the U.S. military.
According to the agency, these bases will be involved in the event of a deterioration in the situation around Taiwan.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in September of this year, Taiwan's Defense Minister Wellington Koo expressed concerns that Taipei may miss signs of a Chinese invasion due to Beijing's high military activity.
Recall that in July 2024, the Financial Times reported that the Taiwanese authorities are preparing state services and infrastructure for an invasion by the Chinese army.
We also reported that the U.S. has approved the sale of missiles and UAVs to Taiwan for about USD 360 million amid the growing threat of a Chinese invasion.
