Prime Minister of Luxembourg calls on European Union to create its own army
The European Union must have its own army to defend itself and become a strong partner for allies.
The Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Luc Frieden, announced this amid fears that Donald Trump will abandon the protection of security in Europe. The British newspaper The Telegraph reported this on Wednesday, November 6.
Frieden noted that the first steps towards a joint army can be made by a "coalition of the willing" among the EU member states.
"We need to discuss the need for a European army. One that is fully integrated and interoperablewith NATO and a strong and indispensable partner to our North American allies," the politician said.
According to him, russia's invasion of Ukraine has become a "wake-up call", therefore institutions are needed to promote and protect democracy "both in Ukraine and elsewhere". The publication writes that European leaders are concerned about the possibility of the U.S. withdrawing from NATO if Trump feels that the members of the alliance are not spending enough on defense. Leaders also fear that Trump could cut off arms and aid to Kyiv - and potentially force Ukraine to negotiate an unfair peace deal with russian dictator vladimir putin.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 7, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that the European Union should form its own united army to prevent conflicts.
On November 3, the American publication The Washington Post reported that Europe fears the election of Donald Trump as the U.S. president and is preparing for a possible break in transatlantic relations.
Recall that in February 2024 it became known that the European Union is discussing the creation of a continental alliance in case the U.S. refuses to defend its European NATO allies after the arrival of Trump.
