Defense Minister of South Korea explains role of observers who can be sent to Ukraine
South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun called it an obvious task for his country to send observers and an analytical team to the russian-Ukrainian war after confirmation of the deployment of North Korean troops in russia. He explained that their role is to analyze the trends of modern warfare, which can be used in the future to ensure better protection of the country.
He said this at a joint briefing with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on October 30.
“So throughout the history in many different wars, including the Iraq war, there have been many cases where we have sent monitoring teams or lesson learned analysis team to the countries that are currently — that were in war,” he noted.
Kim explained that the role of such observers or analytical groups in war is mainly to analyze trends in modern warfare or various aspects of the modern system.
"And especially as we have confirmed North Korean troops were deployed to Russia, I believe it could serve as a great opportunity for our analysis team or observer to learn the movements or trends of the North Korean troops," South Korea's defense chief explained.
He added that in many wars, "we have witnessed" how many new and diverse weapons systems are constantly appearing, and we have also had the opportunity to observe various modern warfare tactics.
"I believe if we can collect such information diligently and then utilize it for our future safety of — and stability of our country, I believe it can serve as an opportunity for us to provide better protection to our — the people of Republic of Korea. I believe it is an obvious task that our military should play to send observers and analysis team to the Russia-Ukraine war. And I — I would even say that if we don't send our observers or analysis team, it would mean that we are not faithfully doing our jobs," Kim emphasized.
Recall that South Korea is considering the possibility of sending a group of military observers to Ukraine to observe and analyze the expected deployment of North Korean troops on the front line by russia.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, during the briefing, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin explained what would happen if North Korean soldiers sent to russia were killed by Ukraine with weapons provided by the United States.
