Biden Administration tells that there is no consensus in NATO regarding invitation of Ukraine to Alliance
Currently, there is no consensus among NATO members on whether to invite Ukraine to the Alliance.
This was stated by a high-ranking representative of the US President Joe Biden's administration, the White House reports.
In particular, the journalists asked questions about how the USA treats Ukraine's victory plan and its individual aspects. The senior official of the administration replied that there is an active conversation about various elements of the plan, which were outlined by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This conversation was with Biden both during the visit of the head of the Ukrainian state to the USA, and yesterday during a phone call. He noted that as of now, certain aspects of the plan, in terms of providing additional military capabilities, are being implemented.
However, regarding the invitation of Ukraine to NATO, there is no consensus on this issue.
"There is a discussion among NATO allies about an invitation. There is currently no consensus on whether to offer Ukraine an invitation. But, as you know, at the NATO summit just a few months ago - in July, in the middle of July - all 32 allies confirmed that Ukraine is on the irreversible path to membership. So, the question is how to encourage this path and how to reach a consensus on the next steps," he said.
Also during the response, a high-ranking official of the White House said that Biden wants Ukraine to win, and these efforts will be provided with adequate resources. According to him, this is precisely why the US President called for a Ramstein meeting at the level of leaders, which will most likely take place in November.
We will remind, on October 17, NATO Secretary General Rutte said that one day Ukraine will become the 33rd or 34th member of the alliance.
As the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander de Croo, said, Ukraine will be a member of NATO. However, it is difficult to implement this when the country is at war with the russian federation.
We also wrote that US presidential candidate Donald Trump agreed with the arguments of Zelenskyy, who told him that either Ukraine will be in NATO or it will have nuclear weapons.
