Lithuania extends temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine until 2026
On August 21, the Lithuanian government extended the validity of temporary residence permits for Ukrainian refugees for another year.
LRT writes about it.
The corresponding protection was still valid until March 2025. The government extended its effect for another year - until March 4, 2026.
According to the Migration Department, 30-40 new applications for passports are registered every day. Currently, more than 44,300 people have valid residence permits in Lithuania based on temporary protection.
According to the Minister of the Interior, Agnė Bilotaitė, the relevant decision will reduce the administrative burden on individuals and the burden on employees of the Migration Department, as well as facilitate the replacement of residence permits when their term expires.
This mechanism provides Ukrainian refugees with collective protection and allows them to enjoy the right to residence, work, housing, medical care and education for children.
Recall that Lithuania recently allocated more than EUR 8.5 million to support Ukrainian refugees.
Meanwhile, the Lithuanian government will no longer cover the costs of education for refugees from Ukraine. It is indicated that this is "the desire of the Ukrainian side". At the same time, some universities said that Ukrainian students will still be able to study for free.
