President Petro Poroshenko has noted that there is a tendency towards escalation of the situation in the zone of the antiterrorist operation (ATO).

Poroshenko was speaking during the opening of a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council.

"The situation in the east of Ukraine currently has a steady tendency towards escalation," said the president.

Poroshenko said that Ukrainian military servicemen have demonstrated their excellent training in the face of enemy raiding parties in recent days.

He also said that the enemy would not be able to catch the Armed Forces by surprise.

According to the president, the escalation of the situation in the ATO zone is not just an attempt to disrupt the Minsk ceasefire agreement by provoking the Ukrainian military through sabotage and firing of weapons that should have been withdrawn a long time ago, but it also demonstrates that the risks and threats to Ukraine's national security, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence remain extremely high.

According to Poroshenko, Ukraine is holding consultations with the European Union and its transatlantic partners on extension of the sanctions against Russia.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, one Ukrainian soldier was killed and five were wounded during the antiterrorist operation on November 10.
