Avakov: Chornobyl Exclusion Zone Wildfires Propagating Towards Chornobyl NPP

The National Guard and Internal Affairs Ministry subunits are on alert.

Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov says wildfires in the Chornobyl exclusion zone are propagating in the direction of the nuclear power plant site, he wrote on Facebook.

"As of 18:30, the situation with the wildfire around the Chornobyl station has aggravated. The blaze attacks the forestland anew towards the Chornobyl NPP site. Crown fire and churlish blasts pose a serious threat of fire spread in the 20km zone from the Chornobyl NPP. Some 400 hectares of woods are in the fire zone," he said.

He says Prime Minister Arsenii Yatseniuk has urgently gathered the emergency situations commission, the National Guard and Internal Affairs Ministry subunits are on alert.

Yatseniuk with the State Emergency Situations Service officers are at the site, in close proximity to the line of fire attack and Avakov is in the emergency operations centre in Kyiv coordinating special aircraft flyouts.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the State Emergency Situations Service has involved 200 people, 35 machines, two planes and a helicopter in the extinguishing of wildfires in the Chornobyl exclusion zone in Kyiv Region.
