Obama Announces Sanctions On Russia In Bid To Find Diplomatic Solution To Armed Conflict In Ukraine

United States President Barack Obama has announced sanctions against Russia in connection with the need to find a diplomatic solution to the armed conflict in Ukraine.

Obama made the announcement at a press briefing that was broadcast on the website of the White House.

Obama said that the U.S. introduced new sanctions on key sectors of the Russian economy in the energy, military and financial spheres.

"...The major sanctions we are announcing today will continue to ratchet up the pressure on Russia, including the cronies and companies that are supporting Russia's illegal actions in Ukraine," said Obama.

He added that Russia's actions in Ukraine and the sanctions that have already been imposed have made a weak Russian economy even weaker.

According to him, nearly USD 100 billion in capital was expected to flee Russia even before the latest sanctions.

Obama also stressed that Russia was once again isolating itself from the international community, setting back decades of genuine progress.

He added that it did not have to come to this.

Obama promised to continue to engage President Putin as well as Ukraine's President Poroshenko and the Unites States' European partners in pursuit of such a diplomatic solution.

As Ukrainian News reported, the United States has imposed sanctions on the Russian state-owned banks Bank of Moscow, Rosselkhozbank, and VTB bank.
