United States: Pro-Russian Separatists Refusing To Lay Down Their Arms And Seek Political Solution

Kerry said that President Petro Poroshenko has stated clearly several times that Ukraine is interested in a bilateral ceasefire.

United States Secretary of State John Kerry has said that pro-Russian separatists are refusing to lay down their arms and try to find a political solution to the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Kerry was speaking at a press briefing after a meeting with Ukraine's Foreign Affairs Minister Pavlo Klimkin in Washington, which was broadcast on the website of the Department of State.

Kerry said that President Petro Poroshenko has stated clearly several times - and that Klimkin confirmed this to him at their meeting - that Ukraine is interested in a bilateral ceasefire.

"Ukrainians are ready for a bilateral ceasefire. Not in the future, but right now. They have proposed a peace plan that includes a serious and meaningful dialogue with the Russian-backed separatists with international participation..." Kerry said.

At the same time, he said that the United States has clear evidence that Russia continues to supply weapons and armed forces across the border and continues to finance the operations of the separatists.

"We now have clear evidence of artillery and rocket fire from the territory of Russia into Ukraine," said Kerry.

According to him, Russia's actions do not show that it wants to end the violence and bloodshed.

"As a result of these actions, Russian-backed separatists have refused to lay down their arms and become part of the political process," said Kerry.

According to him, separatists continue to fire at the Ukrainian forces also from the area where the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed on July 17.

The Secretary of State said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has the ability to change the situation, but he added that the United States and European Union would take additional measures and impose sanctions on key sectors of the Russian economy if this does not happen.

As Ukranews earlier reported, the leaders of the United States, Britain, France, Germany, and Italy have agreed to impose sanctions against Russia for destabilizing the situation in Ukraine.
