ISW calculates territory of Ukraine captured by russian army in 2024
Since the beginning of offensive operations in October 2023, the army of the aggressor country of the russian federation has captured 505 square kilometers of the territory of Ukraine.
This was announced in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
According to the calculations of military analysts, in the period from January 1 to March 28, 2024, russian troops captured almost 100 square kilometers more territory than in the last three months of 2023. Such rates of progress may be related to a combination of a shortage of equipment in Ukraine and more favorable weather conditions in winter than in autumn.
"However, this slight increase in the pace of the russian offensive does not reflect a threat of russian operational success against the backdrop of continuing delays with American security assistance," the report said.
According to the institute, limitations in material support limit the ability of Ukrainian forces to conduct effective defensive operations, and also give russian forces flexibility in conducting offensive operations, which may lead to the fact that russian forces will be able to achieve significant operational successes in the future.
"The arrival of sufficient and regular Western security assistance and the resolution of Ukraine's human resource problems will narrow these options for russian forces and allow Ukrainian forces to prevent russian forces from achieving even minor tactical gains, degrade russian offensive capabilities, and prepare for future counteroffensive operations to liberate territory of Ukraine," military analysts believe.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the russian army is trying to reach the borders of the Donetsk and Luhansk Regions at any cost.
