Ukrainian-Polish exhumation works began in Volyn today
From July 13, research will be conducted on the territory of the former villages of Ostrivky and Volia Ostrovetska (now within the Rivne rural community of the Kovel district of the Volyn Region) with the aim of exhuming and further reburial of the remains of residents who were killed in August 1943. The work will last until August 7.
This was reported by the Institute of National Remembrance.
"Exhumation research will be conducted by the Limited Liability Company "Specialized Institution "Volyn Antiquities" with the participation of Polish specialists: employees of the Institute of National Remembrance of the Republic of Poland and the Medical University of Wroclaw," the report says.
It is noted that the research is being carried out in accordance with the agreements reached as a result of the activities of the Ukrainian-Polish Working Group on National Remembrance.
"Common memory and readiness for understanding bring our peoples closer together in the name of common values based on the Christian tradition, respect for human rights, good neighborliness in Europe and resistance to russian imperialism," said the head of the Institute of National Remembrance, Oleksandr Alferov.
From April 20 to April 30, 2026, search work has already been carried out on the territory of the former villages of Ostrivky and Volia Ostrovetska. Search work was carried out at a number of locations: "Volia Ostrovetska 1", "Volia Ostrovetska 2", "Volia Ostrovetska 3", "Stodola", "Trupne pole", "Ostrivki 1", "Ostrivki 2", "Shkola", "Kuznia".
According to the results of research, signs of burial places and human remains were found at the locations "Volia Ostrovetska 1", "Ostrivki 1", "Shkola". No signs of burial places were found at other locations.
