Ukraine urgently strengthening northern borders due to enemy activity in Belarus - The Guardian
Ukraine is actively strengthening defensive positions on the northern border due to the threat of Belarus being drawn deeper into the war on the side of russia. Currently, the military is building fortifications and strengthening monitoring of the movement of enemy troops and drones. This is reported by The Guardian.
According to journalists, since the beginning of 2026, the Ukrainian side has recorded an increase in the activity of russian reconnaissance drones taking off from the territory of Belarus by approximately 20%. In addition, the appearance of new russian bases for drones and the expansion of infrastructure that the Kremlin can use to support its military operations has been documented near the border.
Despite the alarming dynamics, Ukrainian and European analysts are reassuring: there are currently no signs of the formation of a large strike group for a second offensive from the north. However, experts warn of another danger - the gradual and creeping integration of Minsk into the russian military machine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba suggest that Aleksandr Lukashenko may be preparing for greater involvement in the conflict.
In response to these risks, Ukraine is saturating the border with additional anti-tank barriers, mines, barbed wire and modern surveillance equipment. According to military analysts, the main threat to Kyiv now lies not in a direct offensive by the Belarusian army, but in the transformation of the neighboring country into a permanent and stable springboard for russian strikes. Such a strategy of the Kremlin is aimed at gradually expanding the role of Belarus, which creates long-term security risks for both Ukraine and the entire European region.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on May 28, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine announced that Belarus had prepared bases for the emergency deployment of troops.
