Driver who flew into subway and killed 4 people arrested without bail

A 49-year-old Mercedes-Benz driver who caused a traffic accident on Chokolivskyi Boulevard in Kyiv, killing four people, has been arrested without the possibility of bail. It was reported by the Prosecutor General's Office.

According to a ruling by the Shevchenkivskyi District Court, the man will remain in custody until August 3, 2026.

The accident occurred on June 5 at around 5 p.m. According to the investigation, the driver was speeding, lost control on a curved section of the road, veered off the roadway, and crashed into an underground pedestrian underpass where people were present.

Four people were killed in the accident — two local police officers, a woman, and a 12-year-old boy. Three more people sustained injuries of varying severity.

The driver was detained and charged under Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

It was established that the man was sober at the time of the accident. At the same time, since January 2025, he has been brought to administrative liability ten times for violations of the Traffic Rules, including five times for speeding.

The penalty under the charged article provides for up to 10 years of imprisonment with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a term of up to three years.

As a reminder, the police previously reported on colleagues who were killed as a result of a traffic accident.
