Former US President Barack Obama said that the duties of the leader of the Democratic Party and, in particular, the policies of the current US President Donald Trump are negatively affecting his marriage, creating tension.

He said this in an interview with The New Yorker, The Independent reports.

Obama said that his hopes that Trump would be restrained by the limits of the presidential office and the Constitution quickly dissipated under the pressure of reality. And almost immediately, calls for Obama to speak out about Trump's first presidency intensified, especially when he unveiled his first attempt to ban Muslims from entering the United States and later significantly expanded immigration detention programs in the United States.

According to the former president, who served two terms (January 20, 2009 - January 20, 2017), this pressure is affecting his marriage.

"It really creates tension in our family, and it annoys her. She wants her husband to relax a little and spend more time with her, enjoying what's left of our lives," he said, commenting on Michelle Obama's opinion on the constant calls for him to react to events.

In an interview, Barack Obama added that his refusal to interfere further in politics stems from his desire not to become a "commentator."

"If I were to act like Jon Stewart (American comedian and TV host, political commentator, - ed.) even once a week, just speaking out, criticizing what's going on - which, by the way, I'm glad Jon does - then I wouldn't be a political leader, I would be a commentator," Obama explained.

The publication notes that a portion of voters express hope that former First Lady Michelle Obama herself will enter politics. However, other Democrats who spoke to The New Yorker for the same article called these hopes well-meaning but misguided, and reflecting hopes for a bygone era.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, former US President Barack Obama previously said that aliens do exist, but they are not being held in Area 51 in Nevada.

Obama later clarified his resonant words about the existence of aliens, noting that during his time in office he had not seen any evidence of human contact with extraterrestrial civilizations.
