Ukraine receives Phantom MK-1 humanoid robots for testing at front. They will not hold weapons yet
The American company Foundation has transferred two Phantom MK-1 humanoid robots to Ukraine to test their use in combat conditions.
This was reported by Time with reference to company representatives.
The robots were transferred to Ukraine back in February. The Foundation called Ukraine a key platform for testing new military technologies in real conditions of modern warfare.
What are the scenarios for using robots at the front
The developers consider humanoid platforms as a tool for tasks where conventional drones may be less effective. Among the possible scenarios of use are the delivery of equipment, conducting reconnaissance in closed spaces, in particular in shelters and bunkers, as well as working with infrastructure created for people.
The company also states the further goal of the development: in the future, the robot should be able to use any weapon used by a person.
At the same time, the developers note that the technology is at an early stage of development. Such machines remain expensive, have significant weight, depend on batteries and can lose balance or encounter technical failures.
What are the characteristics of the Phantom MK-1 robot
- Height is 5 feet 9 inches (about 175 cm),
- Weight - 175 pounds (about 79 kg),
- Able to carry a payload weighing up to 44 pounds (about 20 kg),
- Can move at a speed of almost 4 miles per hour (6.44 km/h).
What are the cybersecurity risks
Separately indicate cybersecurity risks. In case of gaining access to software vulnerabilities or communication channels, the robotic system can theoretically be used against its operators.
Experts quoted by Time also draw attention to the limitations of artificial intelligence models. According to them, such systems can make mistakes, show bias or go beyond the established limits when working in a complex environment. In the USA, the principle is that the final decision on the use of force should be made by a person.
What are the plans for MK-2
Phantom MK-1 is currently undergoing initial testing. Foundation plans to introduce the next model in April - Phantom MK-2, which, according to the developers, will have enhanced protection of electronics, water resistance, increased batteries and the ability to carry up to 80 kg of cargo.
Recall that OpenAI plans to change the agreement with the Pentagon and directly prohibit the use of its artificial intelligence systems for deliberate domestic surveillance of US citizens and subjects.
