Peace plan for Ukraine may include accelerated accession to EU - media
A scenario is being discussed in European political circles under which Ukraine could make territorial concessions as part of a potential peace settlement, and in return receive the prospect of accelerated accession to the European Union.
This was announced by the German publication Die Welt, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
According to European officials, the United States, which acts as a mediator in the negotiations, is promoting a model according to which Kyiv receives security guarantees and political support, while russia can retain control over a significant part of Donbas.
Diplomats in Brussels note that the Ukrainian leadership will need a serious argument to convince the society to accept possible concessions - one of such factors could be an accelerated process of accession to the EU.
The 2027 benchmark appears in the discussions as a potential date for membership. However, many sources consider this term unlikely and call the period between 2028 and 2030 more realistic.
At the same time, European structures recognize that accelerating the process will not be easy. The current enlargement procedures require the fulfillment of a large number of conditions: we are talking about reforms, the fight against corruption and strengthening the principles of the rule of law.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with Axios that open calls by US President Donald Trump to the Ukrainian side to make concessions within the framework of the peace process are unfair.
