Another war may break out in Ukraine because of Trump - The Telegraph
Attempts by the United States to speed up the conclusion of agreements between russia and Ukraine may have the opposite effect and create risks for a new escalation of hostilities. This is reported by The Telegraph.
According to British journalists, US President Donald Trump has sent his Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to another round of negotiations in Abu Dhabi, which will take place on February 3-4. The official goal of the meetings is to reach any agreements between Moscow and Kyiv.
The main focus of the negotiations, according to The Telegraph, is on the territorial issue - in particular, on the status of part of the Donetsk Region, which russian troops have been unable to capture during almost four years of full-scale war.
The publication notes that vladimir putin is trying to get at the negotiating table what he could not achieve militarily. At the same time, as the publication emphasizes, the Kremlin's appetites are not limited to the currently occupied territories, and Moscow seeks to get more.
Experts quoted by The Telegraph warn: possible concessions in favor of russia could create conditions for a new phase of the war. Parts of the Donetsk Region are of strategic importance due to powerful defensive lines in the Kramatorsk and Slovyansk areas. In the event of their loss, the russian army will be able to strengthen its positions, regroup and subsequently prepare a new offensive.
Analysts also note that Donald Trump and his Special Envoy are likely to underestimate the Kremlin's long-term plans. According to their estimates, Ukraine's agreement to territorial concessions could give russia a pause to restore forces and prepare for the next stage of the war.
An alternative scenario, according to experts, is to maintain control over key territories, which will require increased pressure on Moscow - in particular, through continued military support for Ukraine and tough economic sanctions to deter further russian aggression.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, a few hours ago, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Trump was not surprised when he learned that russia had launched a massive attack on Ukraine.
