US to reduce its participation in some NATO structures - Reuters
The United States is planning to reduce the number of personnel stationed at several key NATO command centers.
Reuters reported this, citing three sources with knowledge of the matter.
According to the sources, the Trump administration has informed some European capitals that the United States will cut about 200 positions in NATO bodies that oversee and plan the alliance's military and intelligence operations as part of the move.
The bodies that will be affected include the NATO Intelligence Center, located in the UK, as well as the Allied Special Operations Command in Brussels. According to the sources, STRIKFORNATO (NATO's Maritime Strike and Support Force), based in Portugal and overseeing some maritime operations, will also be cut, as will several other similar NATO entities.
The sources did not specify why the US decided to reduce the number of personnel performing functions in NATO, but these steps are generally in line with the Trump administration's stated intention to redirect more resources to the Western Hemisphere.
However, the publication notes that the changes are minor compared to the size of US military forces deployed in Europe and do not necessarily indicate a broader US disengagement from the continent.
The moves are likely to increase European concerns about the future of the Alliance, which are already significant given US President Donald Trump's intensified campaign to take Greenland from Denmark, creating an unprecedented prospect of territorial aggression within NATO.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen has officially announced the need to prepare the population and government agencies for possible military scenario around the island.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said that he is currently unable to end the war in Ukraine due to the lack of simultaneous readiness of the parties for peace. According to him, when one side is determined to end hostilities, the other is not ready for it at that moment.
