The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced that it has reached an agreement with Ukraine and the aggressor country russia on a new localized ceasefire to carry out restoration work in the area of the occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

This is stated in a press release published on the IAEA website on Friday, January 16.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said that this is the fourth localized ceasefire. It is necessary to carry out repair work on the 330 kV high-voltage line, which was damaged and disconnected as a result of hostilities in early January.

The restoration of this line is necessary because after its disconnection, the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP is supplied with power via a single 750 kV line. Disconnecting the plant from external power will create risks of nuclear danger.

"The IAEA continues to work closely with both sides to ensure nuclear safety at ZNPP and prevent a nuclear accident during the war. This temporary ceasefire demonstrates the indispensable role we continue to play," the organization's press service quoted Grossi as saying.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 14, the Defense Forces of the south of Ukraine showed a video filmed by a Ukrainian reconnaissance UAV. It shows that the occupiers placed military equipment close to the Zaporizhzhia NPP reactor buildings.

As a reminder, at the end of December 2025, Ukraine and the russian ederation arranged a local ceasefire in the Zaporizhzhia NPP area. It was necessary to repair one of the power lines supplying the occupied plant.
