Russia wants to make Kyiv uninhabitable - NYT

These actions are intended to undermine the morale of the citizens and make Kyiv uninhabitable. It was reported by The New York Times on Thursday, January 15.

The newspaper writes that russia has intensified its campaign to destroy critical infrastructure just as severe frosts have set in in Ukraine. Although the aggressor has already tried to freeze the capital of more than three million people, it failed. However, this year, russian drone and missile attacks have caused damage and affected people's lives. Power and heating outages are getting longer with each russian attack, the NYT writes.

"While most of the fighting has raged at a distance from Kyiv, in the country’s east, the capital is still a symbolic prize.It is out of reach of Russian ground forces but within range of exploding drones and missiles. Russia’s goal is to render it uninhabitable. While Kyiv has carried on remarkably well through the years of war, it is most vulnerable when the weather turns cold," the article says.

In addition, repeated attacks complicate repairs, as russia strikes at the same sites where reconstruction work is ongoing or has been completed. The occupiers also want to force the Ukrainian government to make concessions in peace talks organized under the mediation of the administration of US President Donald Trump, the NYT noted.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 14, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that amid the strikes of the aggressor country russia and deteriorating weather conditions, an emergency situation would be introduced in the energy sector of Ukraine.
