Europe discusses Greenland exchange for security guarantees for Ukraine - Politico
European officials are considering the option of exchanging Greenland for clearer security guarantees for Ukraine from the US. This is stated in the material of the Politico publication.
The publication writes that US President Donald Trump is seriously determined to gain control over Greenland. Although the option of a military invasion of Nuuk (the island's capital), as was recently the case in Venezuela, seems fantastic, there is a certain path. And Trump seems to be already following it. The concern among Europeans is that the US strategy is very similar to the expansionist policy pursued by the aggressor country of russia.
Politico spoke with European officials, NATO insiders and experts on defense and diplomacy to analyze how the US could establish control over Greenland.
There are four possible scenarios, one of which involves the "exchange" of Greenland for providing Ukraine with clearer and stronger security guarantees from the US.
An unnamed European diplomat said that Europe could offer the US a "security-for-security" package deal. Under the deal, Europe would receive stronger guarantees from the Trump administration regarding Ukraine in exchange for an expanded US role in Greenland.
Politico writes that such a scenario may seem like a "bitter pill" for Europe, but it would be easier to swallow than the alternative, irritating Trump, who could respond with sanctions, withdrawal from peace talks or even support for russia.
Three other options include a US information campaign to strengthen the movement for Greenland's independence with its subsequent absorption, offering the island's residents a lucrative deal or a military invasion.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the day before, French President Emmanuel Macron said in a speech to French Ambassadors that the US under Trump is moving away from international rules and turning away from allies.
We also wrote that European countries have begun developing a plan in case the US decides to seize Greenland by military means.
As a reminder, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen previously called on Trump to stop threatening Greenland after the US military operation in Venezuela.
