In 2025, gas imports to Ukraine increased 9 times compared to 2024 to 6.5 billion cubic meters (2024 - 724 million cubic meters).

ExPro publication writes about this, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

The report says that the volume of gas imports in 2025 is the highest in the last 5 years since 2020.

The increase in gas imports to Ukraine is due to a number of reasons, including gas shortages after russian shelling of Ukrainian gas production, as well as low gas reserves in underground storage facilities at the beginning of the year, which contributed to an increase in gas imports.

Most of the gas came from Hungary and Poland, which remain the cheapest routes for gas imports to Ukraine

Gas imports also came from Slovakia and the Trans-Balkan direction, where a joint capacity booking route, Route 1, was launched in 2025.

According to ExPro estimates, the largest gas importer in 2025 was the state-owned company Naftogaz of Ukraine - more than 5.5 bcm.

In addition, natural gas was imported by the state-owned company GTS Operator of Ukraine and private companies.

The state of domestic natural gas production and consumption will directly affect the volume of gas imports in 2026 and in the following years.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, as of September 14, Ukraine pumped the required amount of gas into underground storage facilities, exceeding last year's values.

In late December, Ukraine, together with neighboring countries, launched two new joint interstate routes for importing natural gas to Ukraine - Route 2 and Route 3 within the framework of the Vertical Corridor initiative.
