Munich airport closed for second night due to drones, airport website reports

Munich International Airport was forced to suspend operations for the second night in a row due to reports of drones near the runways. The situation led to massive delays and flight diversions.

On Friday evening, air traffic in Germany was again under threat. At 9:28 pm, controllers stopped all takeoffs and landings at Munich Airport after receiving a drone alert. According to the federal police, "safety comes first," which is why the decision was made to temporarily block flights.

All Munich police forces were involved in the operation. Officers are checking signals of possible drones and conducting searches. It is not yet known how long the flight ban will last, but the measures are being explained by the need to prevent risks to passengers and crews.

The airport's official website stated: "On the evening of October 3, the German Air Traffic Control Service (DFS) restricted flights at Munich Airport due to unconfirmed drone sightings and suspended them until further notice."

According to Flightradar24, 17 flights were diverted on Friday evening. A day earlier, a similar situation also disrupted the operation of the air harbor: about 3,000 passengers spent the night in the terminal, settling on cots and benches.

On the evening of October 2, unidentified drones were recorded near Munich International Airport. In connection with this, the airport's operation was suspended. Late Thursday evening, the airport was closed, and the runways were unavailable for use for security reasons.

On the morning of October 4, the airport partially resumed its operation.
