Marathon at World Athletics Championships ends with difference of 0.03 second
At the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, for the first time in history, the fate of the gold medal in the marathon was decided by a gap of three hundredths of a second, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
Tanzanian Alphonce Felix Simbu and German Amanal Petros crossed the finish line at the same time after a distance of 42 km. The winner was determined by a photo finish - Simbu turned out to be faster, ahead of his opponent by only 0.03 second.
Before the decisive meters, Simbu was lagging behind, but managed to catch up with his rival and become the world champion. For Petros, silver was especially disappointing - he lost the victory after more than two hours of running.
As previously reported, two participants in the half marathon died in Kazakhstan.
