Rada suspends operation of Convention on prohibition of anti-personnel mines for Ukraine
The Verkhovna Rada suspended the operation of the Convention on the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines for Ukraine. This was announced by the MP from the Holos faction Yaroslava Zhelezniak in the Telegram channel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"Bill No. 0329 - suspension for Ukraine of the operation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction. For - 299 and 305 for urgent signing," he said.
Thus, 229 MPs voted for the adoption of the relevant bill No. 0329, with a minimum of 226 votes.
"Guidance on the provisions of Article 62 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of International Treaties and Article 24 of the Law of Ukraine "On International Treaties of Ukraine", to suspend for Ukraine the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction, signed on behalf of Ukraine on February 24, 1999 in New York and ratified by the Law of Ukraine No. 2566-IV of May 18, 2005," the law states.
This Law shall enter into force on the day following the day of its publication.
The explanatory note to the bill notes that since the aggressor country of russia is not a state party to the Convention, this additionally creates unequal conditions for Ukraine to use protective measures, in connection with which there is an urgent need to eliminate barriers that impede the effective protection of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. One way to eliminate such barriers is to suspend the operation of the 1997 Convention for Ukraine until the complete cessation of russia's armed aggression against Ukraine.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on June 29, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by decree put into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine on Ukraine's withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention, which is aimed at stopping the use of anti-personnel mines.
