Drunk woman drives into checkpoint In Transcarpathia, killing border guard

On the night of July 7, near Perechyn (Zakarpattia Region), border guard Volodymyr Sklovskyi tragically died. While on duty, he was hit by an SUV driven by a woman with signs of alcohol intoxication. It was reported by the Western Regional Department of the State Border Guard Service.

It is noted that the serviceman was performing duties as part of a border guard unit at a checkpoint.

"At 4:30 a.m., a BMW X5 passenger vehicle with Ukrainian registration drove from the oncoming lane into the one near which the border guards were on duty, and crashed into a concrete structure. As a result of the collision, the driver of the SUV, a 53-year-old resident of the city of Perechyn with signs of alcohol intoxication, caused serious injuries to senior border guard Volodymyr Sklovskyi, from which he later died in hospital," the report says.

The female driver refused to undergo a sobriety test. Despite this, the police opened criminal proceedings under Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - "Violation of road traffic safety rules or transport operation by persons driving vehicles while intoxicated".

She faces 5 to 10 years in prison with a ban on driving vehicles for the same period.

The driver also suffered injuries and is in a medical facility under 24-hour guard.

At the time of his death, Volodymyr Sklovskyi was 45 years old. Of these, he served for 27 years in the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. He was a participant in hostilities, was awarded the Order of the President of Ukraine "For Participation in the ATO" and has a number of departmental awards.

His wife and two children were left without a husband and father.

As a reminder, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has opened a criminal case due to a police officer hitting a teenager.
