Iran launches missile strike on US airbase in Qatar - Doha condemns attack and declares right to respond
Iranian forces launched a missile strike on Al-Udeid airbase in Qatar, the largest US military base in the Middle East. It serves as the forward headquarters of the US Central Command (CENTCOM) and houses about 10,000 US troops. This is reported by Reuters.
The attack was carried out by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). In response, the Qatari Foreign Ministry issued a strong statement, condemning the strike as "a flagrant violation of the country's sovereignty, its airspace, the norms of international law and the UN Charter."
"Qatar reserves the right to a direct response proportionate to the nature and scale of this brazen aggression in accordance with international law," wrote Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari.
He also assured that Qatar's air defenses successfully repelled the attack and no one was injured as a result of the attack.
"The base was evacuated earlier, in compliance with established security measures and precautions, given the tensions in the region. All necessary measures were taken to ensure the safety of the base's personnel, including military personnel of the Qatari Armed Forces, friendly forces and others. We confirm that no one was injured or lost people as a result of the attack," the official added.
According to The New York Times, Iran warned in advance about the attack on the military base to minimize losses.
