Pace of humanitarian demining in Ukraine increases by 50% - Defense Ministry

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that over the year the volume of humanitarian demining in Ukraine has increased by almost 50%. As of the beginning of June, 108 mine action operators working on clearing territories from explosive objects have already been certified.

According to the head of the mine action department, Oleh Shuvarskyi, demining quality control has been intensified, and five National Standards in this area are also functioning. Since the beginning of 2025, inspections have been carried out at 241 sites with a total area of 32 km².

Currently, about 139,000 km² of Ukrainian territory are potentially contaminated with explosive objects, of which 14,000 km² are water areas. However, due to hostilities, work is possible only on 31,000 km².

It should be noted that most of the potentially contaminated areas will not actually require a difficult demining process and can be put into operation after an initial non-technical inspection.

Today, according to the Ministry of Economy, about 300 large machines of this category are used in Ukraine for demining large areas, which is the largest fleet in the world. However, even this number is still not enough to clear the entire mined area.

Foreign large demining machines are quite expensive. In addition, they are produced by a small number of manufacturers. Therefore, Ukraine is already mastering its own production of such equipment and the localization of Western equipment at domestic factories.
