Death toll from Myanmar earthquake exceeds 1,000, injured over 2,000 - media

In Myanmar, the death toll from a powerful earthquake has exceeded 1,000, with more than 2,370 people injured.

It was reported by the BBC, citing local authorities.

"The government of the Myanmar junta has just announced a sharp increase in the death toll - it now stands at 1,002 people, with another 2,376 injured," the report said.

Another 30 people are missing.

It is noted that most of the victims are concentrated in the second largest city in Myanmar - Mandalay, which is located near the epicenter of the earthquake.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with one of the teams in Mandalay saying that they were "digging people out with their bare hands."

Myanmar's military leadership has appealed for international help. Neighboring China and India have already sent it.

In Thailand, which was also hit by the earthquake, all eyes are on a collapsed, unfinished skyscraper.

About 100 workers are missing. At least eight people are known to have been killed.
