Italy explains why it is proposed to extend NATO's Article 5 to Ukraine

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has explained her proposal to extend NATO's Article 5 to Ukraine. She believes that this will expose the bluff of russian dictator vladimir putin.

According to RBC-Ukraine, Meloni said this during a speech in the Italian Chamber of Deputies.

According to her, extending NATO's "umbrella" to Ukraine seems to her the simplest and most effective proposal of all the others.

She believes that this proposal will make it possible to understand whether putin really wants to end the war against Ukraine.

"If russia does not plan to invade its neighbors again, then it is unclear why it should not accept security guarantees that are only defensive," Meloni said.

She recalled that the world is based on security guarantees.

"We should not slavishly follow the proposals put forward by others just because we have to decide where we stand. Our role is to participate with our own proposals. Whoever has the courage to make them is doing something useful," Meloni added.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on February 14, 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the United States never wanted to see Ukraine in NATO and did not want the country to become a member of the alliance.

Earlier, Zelenskyy called for the return of nuclear weapons to Ukraine if NATO does not want to see the country as a member.
