Trump insists putin wants to end war, Zelenskyy wants to fight – US President tells media

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House was not successful and that the Ukrainian leader overdid it.

Trump told reporters on the lawn outside the White House as he prepared to leave for his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach for the weekend.

The Hill reported this.

Speaking to reporters before flying to Florida, Trump said he was seeking peace in the war between russia and Ukraine.

"I want immediate peace. President Putin will want to conclude it, and he wants to conclude it — he wants to put an end to it. You saw what I saw today: this (Zelensky) is a person who wants to force us to sign and continue to fight. We will not do that," Trump said.

He also said the Ukrainian President had "overstepped his bounds" in the Oval Office.

"We are looking for peace. We are not looking for someone who is going to sign a deal with a strong power and then not make peace because they feel confident," Trump said.

He added: " I just want to get a deal done, and if a deal happens, good. But you can’t embolden somebody that does not have the cards and all of a sudden that person says, ‘Oh, well now I can keep fighting.’ We are not going to keep fighting. We’re going to get the war done, or let them go and see what happens, let them fight it out."

Trump repeated several times a phrase he had said earlier during his standoff with Zelenskyy, that the Ukrainian President " overplayed his hand."
