Trump adviser says Ukraine's NATO membership 'not up for discussion'
US President Donald Trump's national security adviser Michael Waltz said Ukraine's NATO membership is not up for discussion.
He said this on Fox News on February 24, the anniversary of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
"It's not up for discussion. I don't see the US supporting Ukraine joining NATO, which would require US troops to intervene immediately. In the context of Article 5, that would mean US troops would be directly involved in defending Ukraine," he said.
In addition, he said, security guarantees from European countries are another issue on which the White House wants Europe, and he specifically mentioned France and the UK, to be more actively involved.
"One of the things we fully support is that France, the UK and other European countries want to provide security guarantees for the future of Ukraine. ... We have been asking Europe for many years to take greater responsibility for its own defense," Waltz added.
