Trump orders death penalty to be brought back to US – AP

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing the attorney general to ensure sufficient injection drugs are available for executions, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday, January 21.

Trump has ordered the attorney general to seek the death penalty in cases involving the killing of a law enforcement officer or crimes committed by aliens illegally in the U.S. The U.S. President has also instructed the attorney general to try to overturn Supreme Court precedents that limit the power of state and federal governments to impose the death penalty, the newspaper reported.

"The Government’s most solemn responsibility is to protect its citizens from abhorrent acts, and my Administration will not tolerate efforts to stymie and eviscerate the laws that authorize capital punishment against those who commit horrible acts of violence against American citizens," Trump said in the order.

The head of the White House instructed to take all legal measures to ensure that states have enough lethal injection drugs for executions. AP recalls that 13 death sentences were carried out during the Trump administration during its first term, which is more than under any president in modern history.
