One with broken jaw, the other talkative - SSU tells about first North Korean POWs

Soldiers of the Defense Forces of Ukraine captured the first North Korean servicemen, who fought for the rashists in the Kursk Oblast.

This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU).

Thus, the Security Service of Ukraine, which documents and investigates the relevant crimes, received irrefutable evidence of the participation of the DPRK in the russian federation's war against our state.

These are two North Korean servicemen, one of whom was captured on January 9, 2025 by fighters of tactical group No. 84 of the Special Operations Forces (SOF), and the other by paratroopers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Immediately after being captured, the foreigners were provided with all necessary medical assistance, as provided for by the Geneva Convention.

They were taken to Kyiv for primary investigative measures. They are being held in proper conditions that meet the requirements of international law.

The prisoners do not speak Ukrainian, English or russian, so communication with them takes place through Korean translators in cooperation with the intelligence of the South Korean NIS.

At the time of capture, one of the foreigners had a russian-style military ID card issued in the name of another person with registration in the Republic of Tyva, russia. And the other had no documents at all.

During interrogation, the DPRK serviceman, who was found with the card, told the SSU officers that this document was issued to him in russia in the fall of 2024.

Then, according to him, part of the North Korean combat units underwent coordination with rashists groups for one week.

He himself stated that he was born in 2005, held the position of rifleman and had been doing military service in North Korea since 2021. It is noteworthy that the POW, like the russian military at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, emphasizes that he was supposedly going for training, and not for a war against Ukraine.

Another prisoner of war confirmed the testimony of his "partner". He gave some of the answers to the questions in writing, since he has an injured jaw.

According to preliminary data, he was born in 1999, and has been serving in the DPRK army since 2016 as a sniper-reconnaissance officer.

Currently, the SSU is conducting the necessary investigative measures to establish all the circumstances of the participation of the DPRK military in the russian federation's war against Ukraine. The investigation is being conducted under the procedural guidance of the Prosecutor General's Office under Article 437 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (planning, preparation, initiation and waging of an aggressive war).
