Moscow hopes to keep military bases in Syria and reach agreement with new government

The kremlin wants to conclude an agreement with the new Syrian government to allow it to keep the military base in the port of Tartus and the air base in Hmeimim.

Bloomberg writes about this with reference to sources.

Moscow believes that it has a verbal agreement with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham militant group, which overthrew the Assad regime.

Russian military bases have existed in Syria since 2017, when putin helped Assad suppress opposition resistance by force.

Recall that on November 27, the rebels launched an offensive against Assad's troops in northern Syria, gradually advancing deep into the country. On December 1, the rebels had already captured Aleppo, which Assad's forces and the Wagner PMC fighters helped capture almost a decade ago. As of December 8, the Syrian opposition was already in the capital, Damascus.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to media reports, fled to russia and announced a peaceful transfer of power.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Bashar al-Assad illegally transferred USD 135 billion to the aggressor country of russia, which could make the Syrian leader the richest fugitive in world history.

Some Ukrainian speakers believe that russia suffered a fiasco in Syria because it eliminated the leader of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who built a system of russian influence in the Middle East and Africa.
