Ukrainian Foreign Ministry condemns dispersal of protesters in Georgia and refusal from negotiations on accession to EU
Ukraine condemns the use of force at a peaceful protest in Tbilisi (Georgia) after the country's government decided to suspend negotiations on accession to the EU until 2028.
This is indicated in a statement by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
"The aggravation of the internal political situation in Georgia is a consequence of numerous violations in the parliamentary elections on October 26. All violations recorded by international observers must be investigated, and the perpetrators must be brought to justice," the statement said.
The Foreign Ministry noted that Ukraine is disappointed with the decision of the Georgian government to suspend negotiations on accession to the EU until 2028.
"This decision, as well as the use of force against a peaceful protest, is evidence of the curtailment of democratic processes in the country in favor of Moscow. It is not for nothing that the Georgian leadership has already received public praise from the Kremlin for actions contrary to the European choice of its own people," the Foreign Ministry says.
Ukraine calls on the Georgian government to respect the aspirations of the majority of the Georgian people to be part of a free and democratic Europe, and to return to implementing all the reforms necessary for the country to gain EU membership.
Recall that security forces dispersed the protesters with water cannons and tear gas, and then chased and beat them with batons. Many participants of the protest were hospitalized with bruises and burns. The barricades that had been built were demolished.
