IAEA gave money for russian research conducted in occupied Crimea — media

The IAEA funded scientific research in the occupied Crimea and at the same time declared that Crimea is Ukraine.

This is stated in the investigation of Radio Svoboda.

One of the projects that received funding is a study of pollution in the russian coastal areas of the Black Sea using nuclear and other analytical methods. One of the clauses of the research agreement states that the IAEA is sponsoring the project.

The IAEA is also indicated in the grant application from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) from Dubna near moscow. The application states that samples will be taken in Sevastopol during the study. The application states that the project will last three years and its budget will be EUR 165,000 euros.

However, when the russians published the results of the study in 2019, Sevastopol and Crimea were not mentioned. It was not possible to establish whether samples from Crimea were studied, as planned from the beginning.

One scientific project funded by the IAEA concerned the study of bird migration and the spread of avian influenza using isotopic analysis. The report on the project claimed that some of the bird's feathers were collected in the Crimea.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, stated that Kyiv had informed the IAEA about moscow's preparations for strikes on critical Ukrainian nuclear energy facilities and called for a permanent, expanded presence of missions at all relevant facilities.
