Swiss Parliament recognizes Holodomor as genocide of Ukrainians

The Swiss Parliament recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, announced this on Facebook.

According to the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, in the adopted statement, the Swiss National Council recognizes systematic actions aimed at mass and purposeful killing by starvation with the intention of destroying a national, ethnic, racial or religious group as an act of genocide.

"This is a truly historic decision. And it is an extremely important step on the way to restoring historical justice and preserving the memory of millions of innocent victims," Stefanchuk emphasized.

As reported on the website of the Swiss Parliament, 123 MPs supported the decision, 58 opposed it, and another 7 abstained.

According to the text, four million Ukrainians, about two million Kazakhs and hundreds of thousands of russians died during the famine in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933.

"The National Council recognizes as an act of genocide manifestly systematic actions that lead to mass and purposeful starvation and are committed with the intention of destroying a national, ethnic, racial or religious group as such in whole or in part," the text says.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Switzerland previously extended the special protection status for Ukrainian refugees until March 4, 2026, and also left the support measures unchanged.
