1912 church in Nikopol destroyed by russian shelling

On September 12, as a result of russian mortar shelling in Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk Region, the UOC church in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Znamennia" (Omen) was destroyed.

This is reported by the Kryvyi Rih Diocese of the UOC.

The church was hit around 10 in the morning, during the Divine Liturgy.

"During the singing of the Cherubim song at the Divine Liturgy, a projectile hit the roof of the church, as a result of which a fire started. Despite the efforts of rescuers-firefighters who arrived at the scene of the fire, the church roof, the dome part, and the interior decoration of the church were completely destroyed," the diocese reported.

There were no casualties from the shelling.

The Znamenskyi temple, located in Old Nikopol, is one of the oldest in the city. It miraculously survived the years of persecution of the Church during Soviet times. In the 1930s, it was converted into a warehouse. During the Second World War, the temple again worked as a religious institution, but already in 1953, the temple was closed again. Only in the spring of 1989, by the decision of the city council, the temple was handed over to the Orthodox community.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the occupying forces of the russian federation on the territory of Ukraine, the temple has been the target of the enemy several times. The temple came under the first shelling from the russian army on the night of August 18, 2022, when the occupiers staged a massive shelling of the city.

As previously reported, the russian occupation army tried to destroy the fire and rescue department of the city of Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk Region. During the day, the building of the State Emergency Service was fired upon three times.
