US declassifies information about its nuclear arsenal. How many nuclear warheads does Washington have?
The U.S. National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) has published data on the number of nuclear weapons in Washington's arsenal. The last time such information was made public was in 2021.
This is according to a report published by the NNSA.
So, as of September 2023, there were 3,748 nuclear warheads in the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
It is noted that this is 88% less than at the end of 1967. At that time, the U.S. military had 31,255 nuclear warheads.
The NNSA has published an infographic showing the growth and decline of the U.S. nuclear arsenal since 1945.
The NNSA said that from 1994 to 2023, the U.S. dismantled 12,088 nuclear warheads. At the same time, from the fall of 2020 to the reporting period, 405 warheads were dismantled.
As of now, about 2,000 nuclear warheads have been decommissioned and are awaiting dismantling.
As for tactical nuclear weapons, the NNSA reported that their number has decreased by 90% since the fall of 1991.
At the same time, the agency did not specify how many non-strategic nuclear weapons the U.S. Army possessed as of 1991.
"During the Cold War, the United States possessed large numbers and a wide range of non-strategic nuclear weapons, also known as theater or tactical nuclear weapons. Since 1991, the United States has retired and dismantled nearly all of those weapons,” the document says.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in early July, russia complained to the West that it stopped being afraid of moscow rattling its nuclear weapons.
Recalled that in June, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated in an interview with The Telegraph that the Alliance was discussing bringing its nuclear arsenal into combat readiness.
Besides, Sweden, which recently became a member of NATO, declared its readiness to host U.S. nuclear weapons in the event of a war.
