In Ukraine, emergency power outages lasting up to five hours a day may be implemented in July and August. This scenario is possible in the event of a prolonged period of extreme heat and a resumption of massive russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

Vitalii Zaichenko, the head of the National Power Company "Ukrenergo," announced this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

According to him, the greatest risks will arise in the evening hours, when electricity consumption traditionally increases. If high temperatures persist for at least a week and energy facilities come under new large-scale attacks, temporary restrictions on consumers may be necessary to balance the system.

Zaichenko explained that during the day, the power system has sufficient resources to meet demand thanks to nuclear power generation, electricity imports, and the development of distributed and renewable generation. At the same time, the situation may be more challenging during evening peak hours.

Nevertheless, the head of Ukrenergo emphasized that, barring new large-scale shelling, Ukraine has a good chance of getting through the summer without significant power supply restrictions.

He also noted that the country’s power grid is now much better prepared for potential attacks than it was last year. Over the past year, distributed generation capacity has increased, new power facilities with additional protection are being built, and the level of protection for Ukrenergo and regional power companies’ substations has significantly improved.

According to Zaichenko’s assessment, even if rolling blackouts have to be implemented, they will not be as severe as during the previous fall and winter period.

As a reminder, rolling blackouts were previously implemented in Ukraine in April of this year.
