Ukraine To Receive SAMP/T Air Defense Capable Of Shooting Down Ballistic Missiles - Reuters

Italy will transfer the SAMP/T anti-aircraft missile system battery to Ukraine over the next two months, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said. This was reported by Reuters on Thursday, February 2.

The Italian-French SAMP/T air defense system will be launched in Ukraine within the next two months, Italy's Foreign Minister has said.

"I believe it will work within seven to eight weeks," Tajani said.

The system can track dozens of targets and intercept 10 at once. This is the only European-made system that can intercept ballistic missiles, Reuters reports.

Recall that SAMP/T (from the French Famille de Sol-Air Futurs Sol-Air Moyenne-Portee/Terrestre) is an anti-aircraft missile system that is jointly developed by France and Italy. The complex is designed to protect the territory from aircraft (from 3 to 100 km) and missiles, cruise and ballistic (from 3 to 25 km).

One launcher of this anti-aircraft missile system is armed with 8 missiles, which can be shot in one salvo in just 10 seconds. SAMP/T can take the form of a ground launcher or launcher on an automobile chassis with a wheel arrangement 8 × 8.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 14, French media reported with reference to their own sources that France and Italy agreed to transfer SAMP/T SAM to Ukraine.

On January 10, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that in order to supply SAMP/T SAM to Ukraine, the Italian government needs to suppress the discontent of pro-Russian politicians.
