Humanitarian Disaster. Donors and International Organisations Provide Millions of Ukrainians with Drinking Water

As a result of the war, Ukrainians faced an unprecedented problem — water shortage. To overcome it, philanthropists and international organisations send technical assistance, reagents, and funds to Ukraine.

According to the estimates of international humanitarian organisations, almost 14 million people in Ukraine have lost access to drinking water. People are thirsty. Besides, the shortage creates enormous risks of the outbreak of infectious epidemics.

The help of donors, international organisations, and philanthropists is especially critical for southern Ukraine. Obozrevatel notes this in their publication and reminds us that water shortages were commonplace there, even in peacetime.

In Mykolaiv and Odesa only journalists discovered many humanitarian initiatives to overcome the water shortage for drinking and household needs. Clean water distribution centres with capacities of 20,000 litres each, 14 social infrastructure facilities, and Mykolaiv emergency hospital have water purification systems from Charity Fund Soborna Ukraine, Charity Fund CEO Club, Ukraine-Hilfe Berlin e.V., NGO SaveDnipro.

The International Society of the Red Cross, UN funds and even Japan provide technical and financial assistance to large cities in the south of Ukraine so that cities and rural communities can equip water distribution centres, organise the drilling of wells for its production, ensure transportation, cleaning and storage of reserves, which are measured in dozens of thousands of litres.

Due to the lack of safe drinking water, Ukraine is on the brink of a humanitarian disaster, so people need all the help they can get. International companies, foundations, and philanthropists worldwide send technical resources and chemical reagents to Ukraine, which save Ukrainians from thirst and infections.

According to the journalists of Obozrevatel, the scale of aid is measured in millions of US dollars.

“Danish Aarsleff transferred to Ukraine equipment worth more than 400,000 euros to restore water supply in Kharkiv, Sumy, Donetsk, and other regions. People in many regions of Ukraine will receive 12 million litres of drinking water after cleaning it with modern reagents from the Austrian company BASU thanks to the Foundation of the Dovgiy family “Together We Can”. Having personal contact with its founder Herbert Wandl, the Dovgiy Family Foundation brought and handed over reagents to the State Emergency Service for distribution in places where there is the greatest need,” the newspaper writes about the most significant initiatives.

There is help from the Ukrainian network of the world-famous philanthropic organisation Rotary International as well. Its volunteers add particular substances for water disinfection into humanitarian aid packages. You can see such in first-aid kits under NATO standards. The Ukrainian Rotary International network spent more than half a million US dollars on purchasing special water filters. Their cost ranges from hundreds to thousands of dollars, and the organisation's volunteers provide such filters to war-torn communities and refugee shelters. About 100,000 people across Ukraine have access to safe drinking water thanks to this help.
