President Petro Poroshenko has appointed Judge of the High Administrative Court Tetiana Strilets and Judge of the Prymorskyi District Court of Odesa Serhii Pohrebnyi judges to new Supreme Court.

The Ukrainian News learnt this from a well-informed source within the Presidential Administration.

The High Council for Public Justice (HCPJ) submitted the candidacies of Strilets and Pohrebnyi to the President for approval on November 14.

At the same time, both candidates were barred by the Public Integrity Council (PIC) from appointment to new Supreme Court.

The candidacy of Strilets was vetoed by the PIC because she unlawfully quashed the decisions of the High Justice Council on firing judges who punished Maidan activists.

In addition, Strilets was a member of the Communist Party.

The candidacy of Pohrebnyi was vetoed by the PIC on the grounds that in his rulings there were signs of political influence, and he repeatedly broke with the principles of transparent justice.

In addition, the PIC stated that Pohrebnyi conducted a lavish lifestyle not supported by the level of his income; in particular, the judge buys apartments, land plots and frequently flights to expensive exotic resorts.

Moreover, the PIC stated there were close ties between Pohrebnyi and Member of the Verkhovna Rada Serhii Kivalov (the Opposition Bloc parliamentary faction), a prominent figure of the Yanukovych cohort.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 15, new Supreme Court stated its work.

On November 11, President Petro Poroshenko appointed 113 judges to new Supreme Court.

Before that, the High Qualification Council proposed 120 candidates to the High Council for Public Justice following a contest for selection of judges to new Supreme Court.
