Freedom House Urges Russia To Free Lawyer Kurbedinov

Freedom House, an international human rights organization, urges Russia to free lawyer Emil Kurbedinov, who has been held by the Federal Security Service of Russia and arrested by a court for ten days in the Russia-annexed Crimea on January 26, 2017.

Freedom House issued a statement on the matter, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"Russia should release Kurbedinov and Saliev and should begin complying with the international law on occupation," said Robert Herman, vice president of Freedom House for international programs, according to the statement.

"Russian forces' repeated violation of basic legal principles has made Crimea an area where fundamental human rights no longer apply, and where there is little hope for legal challenges to the security forces' whims," reads the statement.

Freedom House considers lawyer Emil Kurbedinov and Nikolai Polozov, a lawyer to Deputy Chairmen of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Ahtem Chiygoz and Ilmi Umerov, as "two key human rights lawyers in Crimea."

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported. the Ministry of Information Policy said on 25 January 2017 that the Federal Security Service of Russia had arrested Nikolai Polozov, a lawyer to Deputy Chairmen of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Ahtem Chiygoz and Ilmi Umerov.

Nikolai Polozov, a lawyer to Deputy Chairmen of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Ahtem Chiygoz and Ilmi Umerov, regards his coercive bringing to a questioning by the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia an abduction.
