European Council President Tusk Expects Prolongation Of Sanctions Against Russia For Another 6 Months

The President of the European Council, Donald Tusk says the sanctions against the Russian Federation will likely be extended for another six months.

Donald Tusk gave an interview to tvn24, a Polish television channel, on December 1, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"Everything points to the fact that once again [supporters of the sanctions will] manage to extend sanctions against Russia. And what will happen in six months, as is now likely to extend the sanctions for another six months or so, no one can predict," Donald Tusk said.

According to him, advocators of the sanctions against Russia include Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Sweden, and Britain, but this view is no longer common in Europe.

According to Donald Tusk, a key factor that would allow building European unity on the crisis in Ukraine is the "Normandy format".

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko's Decree, which enters into force the National Security and Defense Council's decision to extend Ukraine's sanctions against Russian individuals and legal entities by one year, came into force on October 31, 2016.

The Council of the European Union has extended sanctions against 146 individuals and 37 legal entities involved in actions against the territorial integrity of Ukraine till 15 March 2017.
