European Parliament Planning To Consider Suspension Of Visa-Free Regime For Third Countries On 18 January 2017

Ukraine, European Parliament, visa-free regime, COREPER

The European Parliament is planning to consider a mechanism of suspension of visa-free regime for third countries on 18 January 2017.

This is said in a press release of the European Parliament, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The press release reads that the question of the mechanism of suspension of visa-free regime for third countries is likely to be considered at a first reading during the plenary session meeting of 18 January 2017.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Committee of Permanent Representatives in the European Union (COREPER) has approved commencement of negotiations between the EU Council and the European Parliament on liberalization of the EU's visa regime for Ukrainian citizens. At the same time, the EU Council takes the view that visa liberalization for Ukraine should enter into force at the same time as the new suspension mechanism enters into force.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko expressed confidence that the European Union would introduce visa-free travel for Ukrainian citizens by November 24 and later expressed the hope that the European Union would consider a suspension mechanism for the visa-free regime before the Ukraine-EU summit scheduled for November 24.
