Klimkin Observing Progress In Intra-EU Talks On Mechanism Of Suspension Of Visa-Free Travels For Third Countries

Foreign Affairs Minister Pavlo Klimkin observes some progress in the intra-European Union talks on the mechanism of suspension of visa-free travels for third countries.

He said this during the hour of questions to the Cabinet of Ministers at the Verkhovna Rada, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

Now the consultations on the legislative proposal on how the visa-free travels will be provided to Ukraine are due to start, the minister added.

So far, all key EU institutes have confirmed that Ukraine has met all the benchmarks for the exemption of the visa requirement, Klimkin stressed.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Committee of Permanent Representatives in the European Union (COREPER) on November 17 agreed, on behalf of the Council of the EU, a negotiating position on visa liberalization for Ukraine.

It confirmed the Commission proposal to provide for visa-free travel for EU citizens when traveling to the territory of Ukraine and for citizens of this country when traveling to the EU, for a period of stay of 90 days in any 180-day period.

The Council takes the view that the entry into force of visa liberalization for Ukraine should be at the same time as the entry into force of the new suspension mechanism.

President Petro Poroshenko hopes that the EU will have considered the suspension mechanism before the Ukraine - EU summit, November 24.
