National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) have agreed to cooperate in combating fraud and corruption.

The press service of NABU announced this in a statement, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The cooperation agreement was signed on Wednesday by NABU's Director Artem Sytnik and OLAF's Director Giovanni Kessler.

The document was signed in implementation of the association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union, and it is intended to coordinate efforts in combating fraud and corruption.

"It is rather symbolic that we are signing this agreement with Giovanni Kessler, who was one of the initiators of the creation of NABU. I am confident that support from OLAF will facilitate increased effectiveness of the bureau's investigations," the press service quoted Sytnik as saying.

The cooperation agreement provides for conduct of joint investigations and sharing of information about fraud or violations affecting the budget of the European Union and those that could damage its financial interests.

Among other things, it also provides for protection against fraud involving funds provided to Ukraine by the European Commission within the framework of its financial support package, the total amount of which has been declared at EUR 11 billion.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Council of Europe's General Secretary Thorbjorn Jagland has announced that the European Community plans to provide expertise and technical assistance to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau.
